Psalm 83 and The Arab Uprising - There Might Be a Connection

Some scholars think that there might be a connection between the recent Arab uprisings in the Near East and that what they interpret as a yet-to-be-fulfilled prophecy in Psalm 83. Written 3,000 years ago, this psalm describes a scheme by Israel’s neighbours to attack and destroy her:
“For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; And those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones. They have said, ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.’ ” (Ps. 83: 2-4).
“The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites; Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assyria also has joined with them; They have helped the children of Lot.” (verses 6-8).
While the Arab nations have united their forces against Israel several times in the 20thcentury (1948, 1956, 1967 and 1982), their coalition did not seem to match the description in Psalm 83. This has led some commentators to suggest that the stage is being set for a major clash between Israel and her neighbours in the near future. They suggest that if hard-line Islamists manage to take over these countries they will use their strength in an effort to complete that what the Arab leaders vowed to do in 1948, i.e., to completely destroy Israel.
However, if Arab leaders were wise, they would examine Psalm 83 carefully because it suggests that Israel’s enemies will be defeated:
“Fill their faces with shame, That they may seek Your name, O LORD. Let them be confounded and dismayed forever; Yes, let them be put to shame and perish, That they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth.” (verses 16-18).
They should remember that Israel is a nation chosen by God, who promised to bless those who bless Abraham’s descendants and to curse those who curse them (Genesis 12:3).
