A Lesson From Elijah: Only The True God Answers Prayer

At a time of great apostasy in Israel, the prophet Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, saying, “Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” (1 Kings 18:24).

In our time, people worship and call on many kinds of gods. However, nothing much seems to have changed since Elijah’s time. False gods cannot answer our prayers, the deepest yearnings of our heart.

In Elijah’s days, the prophets of Baal failed to get any answer from their god, although they “called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, ‘O Baal, hear us!’ But there was no voice; no one answered.” (1 Kings 18:26).

It was a very different story when Elijah began to pray to his God. Fire came down from heaven “and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, ‘The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!’ ”. (1 Kings 18: 38-39).

There is very little, if anything, new under the sun. Even today, only the God of the Bible is able to answer prayer, by fire, if necessary, but often by some other means.

He is the all-powerful  “I Am” of Scripture, who although He is transcendent is also immanent, “God with us”, willing to answer all those who call on Him.
