Did You Ever Hear God Speaking To You?

Does God speak to us today? In Bible times, He communicated with men and women in various ways. " For God does speak-now one way, now another", Elihu told Job. However, it might be difficult for us to understand that God still speaks to us.

Speaking might not be the best word to describe that what may happen between God and us. When Jesus was on earth, He pointed out that " God is spirit" (John 4:24). He is not a finite physical being like we are and He might not always use audible words but I believe He still wants to speak to us.

According to the Christian view, God has revealed Himself to us through His Word, the Bible as well as through His living Word, Jesus Christ. Occasionally, He might also speak to us directly, but never in ways that contradict His written Word.

While some might believe that the days of miracles are over, I have not found any biblical support for this view. The gospel has not changed. " Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever"(Hebrews 13:8). I think that the miraculous would also include God speaking to us.

I'll admit that I'm no mystic and take a rather critical approach to what I feel are excesses in the charismatic movement, but I'm not a cessationist, either. I do believe that God is interested in what is happening in His creation and He wants to let us know that He cares for us.

I have had moments in my life in which I have felt that God was speaking to me. For instance, on two separate occasions this year when I was facing a crisis, I suddenly felt being touched by God's holiness and I understood that He would solve the problem I was encountering. In those trials I got a glimpse of " the peace of God, which transcends all understanding." (Philippians 4:7).

And on both occasions a seemingly impossible situation turned into a possibility. It reminds me of Jesus' words: " What is impossible with man is possible with God"(Luke 18:27).

Some skeptics might discount these as mere coincidences but then I simply have had too many coincidences in my life to believe that they are mere coincidences.

Scripture verses are from the New International Version (NIV).

HE is most certainly able, creative, capable and knows just how we will be able to "hear" Him best. Lining up what we have "heard" with His word and that peace. Yes, I agree, God can still speak to us today!
