In recent months, North Korea has frequently made news headlines. Just when we got used to nuclear warheads, missile tests and torpedo attacks, the Koreans came up with something entirely different.

The latest item has to do with money. Lots of it, actually. The cash-strapped Democratic People's Republic of Korea is seeking almost 65 trillion US dollars in compensation for "crimes the U.S. imperialists committed against the Korean people who were leading a peaceful happy life".

The Korean Central News Agency recently published a very long list of the "most barbarous and hideous crimes" the United States, the "chieftain of evils", committed against the Korean people. The press release also uses words like "imperialist aggressors", "atrocities" and even "holocaust".

Yes, the language of the North Korean press release differs considerably from the ones we are more familiar with.

The 65 trillion dollars is not a typing error. The exact amount the Democratic People's Republic wants is 64 959 854 000 000 dollars, which even by US standards is a lot of money and obviously much more by North Korean standards. The Koreans say that this amount is "based on old records and official testimonies made by survivors."

I suspect that "Supreme Leader" and "General Secretary of the Worker's Party of Korea " Kim Jong-il and his generals know that the US just does not have 65 trillion dollars stacked away for a rainy day but it seems that they are willing to haggle. They definitely want some of the money. Perhaps they might be willing to settle for a paltry sum, say 62 trillion dollars. Who knows?

In other words, while the leaders of the Democratic People's Republic might not love the US they would certainly love to get some money from Uncle Sam.
