Maliss in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in north-east Germany is usually a peaceful little village. Last week, however, its 1,400 inhabitants had anything but a quiet and peaceful night.
A huge explosion blew up the village bank at 2 AM on Tuesday, May 25. The bank was reduced to a pile of rubble and the noise put the would-be robbers to flight empty-handed. They even left a stolen delivery van near the building.
The German daily Die Welt reported that the would-be robbers obviously overestimated the amount of explosives they needed to blow open the front door of the bank. Instead, they managed to demolish the entire building except the safe and the cash dispenser.
It seems that the fictive world that Sir P. G. Wodehouse created in his Jeeves books is not the only world in which Mr. Murphy interferes with the plans of folks who would like to get some easy money.
Or perhaps the words of the Old Testament prophet Hosea describe the experience of the unlucky robbers best: " They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind ."
The fate of the German would-be robbers remind us that it is far better to stick to the narrow path than to try to get our hands on something that is not legally ours.
