Mother Dies While Giving Birth to Lifeless Son But Both Come Back to Life After Delivery

Christmas time is closely associated with the miraculous. While most people would think about the events at Bethlehem two millennia ago with shepherds, angels, and a young woman giving birth to a baby boy in a manger, a Colorado husband and wife believe they got a very real miracle of their own the past Christmas Eve.

It was a Christmas that neither the Hermanstorfers nor the doctors or nursing staff at Colorado Springs Memorial Hospital will forget anytime soon. It all began when Tracey Hermanstorfer stopped breathing while she was giving birth to her son by Caesarean section on December 24th.

Then her heart stopped beating. As reported by BBC News, Dr Stephanie Martin said that Mrs Hermanstorfer was definitely dead for four or five minutes since she did not breathe or have a heartbeat. She was "as gray as her sweatsuit." There were no signs of life.

Her husband Mike Hermanstorfer, who was holding her hand while all this happened, said she was completely blue and ice cold.

The doctors could do nothing to help the mother but they managed to resuscitate the baby. A few minutes after delivery, both mother and child began breathing.

Both recovered completely.

Dr Stephanie Martin says she does not have an explanation as to how Tracey Hermanstorfer came back to life. The Hermanstorfers, however, believe they got a real Christmas miracle, "a second chance in life."

BBC News posted a brief video clip of the incident at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8435457.stm
