The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

The greatest love story of all time was not produced in Hollywood and not even in Bollywood. True love is without doubt a recurring theme in novels and films. One Hollywood blockbuster was simply entitled Love Story. The film, released in 1970, starring Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neil, is based on Erich Segal's bestseller and describes true love that abides till the end.

But the film pales in comparison with a more profound story of love. It is probably no exaggeration to say that the love between a man and a woman is a reflection, albeit a weak one, of the love that was designed in God's perfect world.

The greatest love story begins in eternity with God's plan for humanity. The Director is God the Holy Spirit, who chose to work with approximately forty people. He inspired them, told them what to write about but let them use their own style and even vocabulary. Thus Luke, for example, writes in a way that differs considerably from John's style. Yet the director made sure that each contribution followed the storyline in meticulous detail so that " All Scripture is God-breathed".

For God's point of view, the story begins in eternity past. God, who is omniscient or all-knowing, knew what would happen to man whom He planned to create to fellowship with Him in a perfect world. Man rejected Divine love and chose to follow his own downward path.

But God refused to reject mankind. He sent prophets to invite people to return to Him, but for the most part they refused to listen to these spokesmen. Finally, He sent His only Son. A rebellious people put Him to death on a cross. That was not the end, however.

From our viewpoint, the greatest love story begins with the creation week in Genesis. God has close fellowship with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden but the bliss ends all too soon. After many dramatic turns, the story ends in the Book of Revelation with God living among His redeemed people on a restored earth.

And unlike some earthly love stories, this story has an exceptionally happy ending:

Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."

(Revelation 21:1-4, NKJV)
